Plaque commemorating the Polish children of Pahiatua in Wellington, New Zealand. On 31 October 1944, 733 Polish children, along with 105 caregivers, arrived at the port of Wellington. The lives of the charges were marked by the tragic events of the Second World War. During it, they lost their parents and close family, then were deported to Russia. After 1941, the children left Russia with the Anders Army and went to Iran. After spending two years there, they went to New Zealand. There, after the war, the government offered them citizenship. The plaque thanks the government and the New Zealand Army, the Catholic Church, the guardians, the teachers and all those who provided assistance.
