The Church of the Holy Spirit is one of the most important monuments of the city, and at the same time one of the least known in terms of its construction history.

According to legend, the first church on this site was supposed to have been built during the reign of Gediminas. In 1408, Grand Duke Vytautas founded the Holy Spirit parish church here, which was handed over to the Dominicans by Grand Duke Alexander in 1501. The Dominicans built their monastery next to it. The complex was destroyed by fires in 1610 and 1655. Between 1679 and 1688, a comprehensive reconstruction of the church took place, during which it received its current dimensions. The temple received its present dome and façade after another fire damage and another reconstruction in 1752-1760. Despite the dissolution of the monastery, the complex has survived to the present day in a form similar to that of the 18th century. In the post-war period, the Church of the Holy Spirit became a mainstay of Polishness in Vilnius.

Today, the church itself is in relatively good condition, but the monastery buildings are largely devastated, despite renovation work undertaken in the 1980s.
