Biography:

Władysław Sikorski (1881-1943), born in Tuszów Narodowy, son of Tomasz and Emilia Hawrowska. He had an older brother, Stanisław, and two sisters, Eugenia and Helena. He completed his secondary and gymnasium education in Lviv at the Franz Josef Gymnasium. He studied at the Faculty of Road and Bridge Engineering of the Lviv Polytechnic. He took part in the mobilisation for the Balkan War. In 1914, he became a lieutenant in the reserves. He was one of the founders of the Active Combat Association, and later took part in the founding of the Riflemen's Association. He fought in the First World War. In 1918, he joined the Polish Army. He served in various command positions during the Polish-Bolshevik War. In 1922, he was appointed Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior. On 30 July 1941, he signed a treaty with Ivan Maysky, Ambassador of the USSR, restoring diplomatic relations between the countries, as a result of which the Soviet authorities announced an amnesty for Poles imprisoned in camps in the USSR. In 1943, he travelled to Gibraltar to inspect the Polish Army forces in the Middle East. He died in a plane crash that day. Funeral services were held at the New Polish House in Jerusalem. There is a memorial to the General in Gibraltar.
