Wojciech Nowina-Macherzyński - multimedia artist, painter, graphic artist and sculptor

Graduated from a secondary art school in Częstochowa. In 1981-1986, he studied at the Faculty of Painting and Graphics at the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. He obtained his diploma with honours under the supervision of Professor Juliusz Joniak in the Faculty of Painting. In 1986-1988 he studied at the postgraduate scenography department under professors Lidia and Jerzy Skarżyński. He received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and Art in 1986-1987. In 1987, Macherzyński's work was awarded an honourable mention at the International Art Competition - Artitude in New York. In 1988, the artist was awarded the Prize of the Mayor of the City of Cracow for young artists.

Between 1988 and 1994, Wojciech Macherzyński lived and worked in Norway. In 1991, he received a scholarship from the art centre in Stavanger, Norway. In 1993, his work was awarded a distinction at the TEFAF Maastricht International Print Biennal. Between 1993 and 1994, the artist was awarded a scholarship by the government of the Kingdom of Norway. After artistic experiences in Western Europe - cooperation with German and Scandinavian galleries - Wojciech Macherzyński left for Canada in 1994. In 1995, his work was awarded in the printmaking category at the 22nd Art Competition in Brampton/Ontario. The artist completed his education in computer graphics at Seneca College in Toronto. Together with his wife, an architect, he ran his own studio Wojciech Macherzynski & Design Arts Studio for more than twenty years, where he completed commissions and his own designs. In 2001, he won second prize at the Toronto Biennale of Art. Macherzynski is the creator of several murals located in: Stavanger, Toronto, Mississauga, Halifax. The artist has participated in over 100 exhibitions worldwide.

Macherzyński's paintings are expressive and emotional. The artist strives to show the dark sides of human nature, to convey the anxiety of our existence, but also seeks hope. The paintings are poignant in their message, fascinating in their technique, texture and colour. Wojciech Macherzyński does not paint individual people - but symbols of ideas, figures embodying myths, the mystery of life, religion. It is abstraction which is a deep reflection on the human condition, humanist painting which provokes and poses questions, the art of emotions experienced by the artist. The basis of his painting language is the search for the relationship between light, colour and texture.

The artistic medium is oil on canvas and paper, acrylic, Chinese and Indian ink. The evolution of subject matter and style has been from figurative painting and through synthesising, the artist has arrived at abstract imagery. Throughout, he has sought to understand the role of light in painting. More recently, Macherzyński admits to a fascination with Chinese and Japanese painting - he is inspired by the aesthetic and imaginative language created by these cultures, including calligraphy. Wojciech Macherzyński has taken part in seminars, art symposia and plein-air events all over the world.

The artist's works can be found in museum and private collections: the National Museum in Warsaw, the National Museum in Kraków, the Mathildehohe Institute in Frankfurt, the Panamericana Instituto del Arte in Puerto Rico, the Arts Council Norway, the Norwegian Research Council for Science and Humanities, the Stavanger City Museum, the private collection of Raisa and Mikhail Gorbachev, the collection of King Harald V.

Work in catalogue
Wojciech Nowina-Macherzynski, 'Revelation of Light III', oil on canvas, 80 x 120 cm. The work represents all the elements of the artist's style: fascination with colour, light and the texture of the painting. Bright streaks of light play a dynamic role in the grey of the painting. Expressively applied paint creates thick, vibrating layers. By synthesising images of nature, the artist constructs his painterly world of lyrical abstraction. Distant associations with the world of mountains, mountain passes and the sun illuminating high peaks are evoked.
