Zhovkva Castle undergoes comprehensive renovation and conservation work

Works completed in 2023
The castle in Zhovkva was built in 1594-1610 with the foundation of the crown field hetman, Stanislav Zhovkva. The Italian architect Paweł Szczęśliwy was responsible for the design and construction of the foundation, and his work was continued by Paweł Rzymianin and Ambroży Przychylny. After 1674, when Jan III Sobieski was the owner of the castle and the town, the castle was extended (by the architect Piotr Beber) and richly furnished so that it corresponded to its then function as a royal residence.

According to Ukrainian law, Zhovkva Castle is an architectural monument of national importance. Since 2020, it has been one of the branches of the B. Voznytskyi Lviv National Art Gallery. There is a museum in part of the castle halls.

Zhovkva Castle is undergoing comprehensive renovation and conservation works, the pace and manner of which depend on the availability of finances. The rescue works planned in recent years, due to the Russian aggression against Ukraine and the withholding of budget funds, did not include the northern tower. The work programme for the tower included replacing the roof covering and installing a rainwater drainage system and lightning protection system, as well as strengthening the walls. In order to prevent further ruination of the monument, the director of the Lviv National Art Gallery, Mr Taras Vozniak, turned to the POLONIKA Institute with a request to fund these works. The execution of the new roofing made it possible to permanently protect the north tower and prepare it for further renovation work.
