Grave of an interned soldier of the 2nd Infantry Rifle Division

The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division, which took part in the fighting in France in 1940, was ordered to withdraw to Switzerland after running out of ammunition. On the night of 19-20 June 1940, the division's soldiers, numbering around 13,000, crossed the Swiss border. They were interned by the Swiss authorities and stayed in that country until the end of the war in camps set up for them, working in various sectors of the economy. Stans was one of the camps where the soldiers were accommodated. In the cemetery of the Capuchin Friars, rests Pvt. Jan Wielgosik of the 2nd DSP, who died on 13.06.1942 of electrocution. His tombstone is in the form of a vertical plaque with a metal plate with personal data and the divisional eagle.
