Biography:

Franciszek Żwirko (1895-1932), Polish lieutenant, pilot in the Polish Army, also a sports pilot. Together with engineer Stanisław Wigura, they won first place in the "Challenge" competition in 1932. They both died on 11 September 1932 in a plane crash in a forest near Cierlick Górny near Cieszyn. The site of the accident is known as the 'Gravel Pit'.
