Sgt. Stanislaw Beśko, pilot of the 1st Airborne Regiment, evacuated to Romania in September 1939 with a training squadron of his regiment. He then made his way to France, where, on 15.12.1940, he was assigned to a Polish aviation unit - Air Battalion No. 145 in Lyon. On 1.03.1940, he was sent to the air base in Marrakech to train young Polish pilots at the pilot school No. 53. On 29.03.1940, he took part in aerobatic exercises in a Morane-Saulnier MS-230 aircraft, piloted by Ensign Alain de Gabory - an instructor who introduced him to this model of aircraft. During these exercises, the aircraft crashed and both pilots died on the spot. The incident took place about 2 km from an area called Durance (now the Sidi Zouine village area), an auxiliary runway located 8 km north-west of Marrakech.
The bodies of the pilots were laid to rest at the Cimetiere Européen de Marrakech cemetery in the Gueliz district. It is now a uniformly decorated French military quarters in sector H of this cemetery, with simple white crosses and small nameplates. It is looked after by the L`Office national des combattants et des victimes de guerre (ONaCVG). Stanisław Beśko is buried in grave No. 126. The text on the inscription plate is as follows: BESKO STANISLAW / Sergent-chef-BA / DECEDE le 29.03.1940. The remains of Alain de Gabora were exhumed and taken to France.
Other Polish names can be found in the military quarters - mainly those of soldiers of the 2. Foreign Infantry Regiment, which was part of the 6th Light Armoured Brigade in the Foreign Legion, who died and were killed in Morocco in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s.
