In the 16th century the village belonged to the Monasterzysek estate together with 18 other villages. The 1868 census shows that Zofia Matkowska (born 1822) was the owner of the village at that time. The censuses of 1897 and 1909 state that Bertniki belonged to her granddaughter, Bar. Kazimiera Blazowska (born 1876). Like many other villages in the Halych region, Bertniki (then Berniki) suffered during the Tatar invasions in the 17th century, especially in 1621 and in 1626, when the Ordinians ravaged 16 villages and 3 towns in the Halych district4. There was no parish in the village. Greek Catholics belonged to the parish of Hrehors, Catholics to the community in nearby Monasterzyska. According to the 1880 "Geographical Dictionary", Bertniki was inhabited by 357 people of Greek Catholic faith. The 1921 census states that there were 82 Catholics, 501 Greek Catholics and 1 non-Catholic Christian living in the village. At that time, 93 Poles and 493 Ruthenians were registered. In 1928, 79 people declared to be Roman Catholics.
