In Butovo, near Moscow, and the kolkhoz next to it, the NKVD organised the largest 'Specpoligon' in the area. Here the victims of the Soviet terror - people who did not perform any significant function - were shot and buried. Soviet documents confirm that between 8.08.1937 and 19.10.1938, 20,765 people were shot here, including about 1,000 Poles. The Poles were executed on the orders of Yezhov, head of the NKVD, under the so-called 'small lines order', i.e. the liquidation of national minorities in Russia. On 16.05.1938, 85 students aged 17-23, accused of founding the Union of Polish Patriots, were tried in Moscow. They were executed in Butovo on 26.05.1938. It is likely that other Poles were also executed with them. In September 2017, the Garden of Remembrance was unveiled on the former training ground. The community of the Butovo Cathedral of the New Russian Martyrs and Confessors is the initiator of the erection of this memorial. The memorial was built in the form of an avenue descending below ground level - symbolising the ditches over which people were shot. On the sides of the avenue stand vertical granite slabs on which are engraved the personalities of more than 20,000 people murdered in Butovo, including Poles.
