The exhibition 'Nekropolia na Bajkowa Góra. Polish traces at the Bajkowa cemetery in Kiev" is devoted to the history of the necropolis, which is little known in Poland.

Kiev is a city that hides many unobvious Polish traces. It was here that major Polish companies were represented in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Polish press was published and numerous Polish organisations and a Polish theatre were active here.

The Bajkowa Cemetery is one of them. It was established in 1834 and its name has nothing to do with fairy tales, but derives from the name of the Russian general Sergei Bajkov. This is because it was to him that the land around today's cemetery belonged in the early 19th century.

Many chapels designed by famous Kiev architects, including Vladislav Horodetsky, have been preserved in the necropolis. There are also several hundred tombstones with inscriptions in Polish. Among those buried here are the bookseller and publisher Leon Idzikowski, the lawyer Leonard Jankowski, the painter Wilhelm Kotarbiński, the photographer Włodzimierz Wysocki, the collector Józef Choynowski and the President of Kyiv Józef Zawadzki. There are also graves of well-known Ukrainian citizens, such as the poetess Lesia Ukrainka or the aircraft designer Oleg Antonov. The exhibition definitely brings a place that is worth getting to know better.
