Biography:

Marian Kukiel (1885-1973), graduated from gymnasium in Tarnów, followed by history studies at the Faculty of Philosophy of Franz Josef University in Lvov. From his school days he took part in patriotic activities, engaging in non-independence activities within circles and other organisations. In 1905, he took part in the Russian Revolution. He was active in the Polish Socialist Party. He was one of the founders of the Union of Active Struggle. He fought in the First World War, the Polish-Bolshevik War. He worked at the Jagiellonian University and was also director of the Czartoryski Museum. He also took part in the activities of the Warsaw Scientific Society and the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. In the Second World War he took part in the defence of Lvov. In 1939, he went to France, then to the United Kingdom. In 1942, he became Minister of Defence.
