Jerzy Iwanowski h. Rogala odm. (1878-1965), born in Lebiodka near Lida, died in Penley, son of Leonard and Jadwiga von Reichel, Polish social activist and politician, engineer, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Central Lithuania (1920-1922), and senator of the second and third terms (1928-1935), founder of the National and State Union (1922). Graduate of the Mechanical Faculty of the St Petersburg Institute of Technology. PPS activist. Worked as a technology engineer at Handtke's Steelworks in Raków (1901-1903). He was imprisoned in Warsaw (1903-1905) and exiled deep into Russia. He stayed in Vilnius from 1906 to 1907 and worked at the St Petersburg and Moscow branches of the British Westinghouse Electric Co. Fearing repression, he left for China. There he worked with the "Siemens-Schuckert" company in Manchuria and later was its representative in Japan, the USA and Russia. During World War I, he organised the transfer of Polish prisoners of war to the Polish Legions. In 1916, he was in the USA, where he collaborated with the Committee of National Defence. In 1917, he was active in the Polish Military Organisation in Moscow. In 1918, he took up the portfolio of Minister of Industry and Trade, and in 1919 of Minister of Labour Protection and Social Welfare. In 1919, he headed the Polish trade mission to Denikin's government. He participated in the Polish-Bolshevik war. He was one of the signatories of the proclamation "To the people of Central Lithuania". He was appointed Director of the Foreign Affairs Department of the Provisional Government Commission by General Lucjan Żeligowski (1920-1922). From 1922, he remained in reserve with the rank of lieutenant-colonel in the army, and in 1923 as a reserve officer. He was active in the "Machnicki" Masonic lodge, and was a member of the YMCA and Rotary Club in Warsaw. During the Second World War, he fought in the Polish Armed Forces as a lieutenant-colonel. After the war, he stayed in London. From 1948 to 1956 and 1957 to 1965, he was chairman of the Supreme Council of the Polish Independence League. He was a member of the Provisional Council for National Unity.
