Biography:

Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929), born in Radom, son of Julian and Maria née Korwin-Szymanowski, painter. He graduated from grammar school in Kraków. In this city he later received his artistic education. He trained in private lessons with Leonard Piccard, and also attended lectures given at the School of Fine Arts as a free student, later officially becoming a student there. In 1875, he moved to Paris. Already in his lifetime he became a well-known and respected painter. In 1896, he began lecturing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. He was one of the founders of the Society of Polish Artists "Sztuka". He also taught painting to women at the A. Baraniecki Higher Courses for Women. From 1912 he was the rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow. During the First World War he stayed in Vienna. From 1923 to 1926, he lived in a 19th-century manor house in Lusławice, where he taught painting. Towards the end of his life he lost his sight. Malczewski is the author of many very important paintings for Polish culture.
