Graves of 5 Polish refugees from the USSR in the local cemetery

The cemetery in Nyamegita contains several dozen earth and concrete tombstones, among them 5 graves of Polish civilian refugees who left the USSR in 1942 with General Anders' Army and settled in the nearby settlement built near Masindi (now there is a village of Nyabeya on the site of the settlement). These were the first burials of the Polish deceased; subsequent burials were already taking place in the cemetery established by the Polish settlement in Masindi. The gravestones, measuring 2 m x 1 m, are made of concrete, with concrete crosses 0.5 m high placed on them. All the graves follow the same pattern, also used later in the new cemetery near the Polish settlement. The graves were restored as part of the restoration work of the Polish cemetery in the current Nyabeya settlement, carried out in 2022 by the Documentation Centre for Displaced Persons, Expulsions and Resettlement of the Pedagogical University in Krakow. The work was funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage under the 'Sites of National Remembrance Abroad' programme.
