Graves of victims of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA)

Orzeszyn was a Polish colony of nearly 70 families. There was 1 Ukrainian family living there.

From the spring of 1943, armed men kept vigil at night in the colony, expecting an attack by Ukrainians. In the morning the weapons were hidden so that they would not be found in case of a search.

On the morning of 11.07.1943, the colony was surrounded by the Ukrainians. Several men were taken to the forest and shot. The remaining inhabitants were shot near the forest. The property of the Poles was looted. According to witnesses, at least 300 Poles were killed and about 60 survived.

The upholders dragged the corpses of the victims to three Soviet trenches (built in 1940-1941). The corpses remained in these trenches until the present day, forming graves of 12 metres each. Witnesses mention that, in addition to the graves in the post-Soviet trenches, there are also individual graves of victims in the field, but no one can currently pinpoint their location.

On 12.07.1994 a funeral ceremony was held in Orzeszyn. On this occasion, the graves were cleaned up, trees and bushes were removed, a passageway was made to each grave, and crosses were erected on the graves. In 1996, the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance erected a tall wooden cross here as a central commemoration. In 2008, with funds from the Association for the Commemoration of Poles Murdered in Volhynia, at least one of the high wooden crosses was replaced with a new one. The inscription on a plaque attached to the cross reads: "To the 306 Poles living in Orzeszyna / who tragically died on 11 July 1943 / in eternal memory / Compatriots".

In 2011, members of the Association carried out repair and renovation work on this commemoration.
