Triptych of the main altar in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Lustenau

Variants of the name:
Kirche zum Guten Hirten

Situated among the low-rise housing estate Hasenfeld of the small town of Lustenau, close to the Liechtenstein border, the church was built between 1972 and 1979 according to a 1968 design by the Austrian architect Heinrich Tritthart. The side chapel was rebuilt in 2003.

. Janczak's decoration was not commissioned until 1987 by parish priest Rudolf Bischof. The simple architecture of the hexagonal nave is varied and organised only by the metal ceiling structure, the pulpit and tabernacle by the Viennese artist Zbynek Sekal and works by a Polish painter.

The large triptych, suspended above the main altar, depicts biblical feasts: Abraham on the left wing, those from the New Testament in the middle section, and scenes from the history of the apostles on the right wing. The series of 17 canvases includes scenes of the Stations of the Cross and images of the Good Shepherd at the ends of the group. Janczak is also the author of the colourful stained glass windows in the side chapel (the panes were melted at the Wil plant in Switzerland): the left window depicts Adam and Eve with a basket of fruit standing in the landscape; the right window depicts the baptism of Christ in the Jordan, a young couple with a violinist and an angel raising a dead body, a foreshadowing of the resurrection. The stylistics of the stained glass is reminiscent of Janczak's work in this technique from the church in Boswil, Switzerland (1992). There, incidentally, we find a similar representation of Paradise.
