Conservation of stained-glass windows in the parish church of St Bartholomew in Drohobych (Ukraine)

Works completed in 2023

In 2023, conservation work was carried out on the stained-glass behind the altar in St Bartholomew's Church in Drohobych. The stained-glass window dates back to 1934. It was made at the Zakład Witrażów i Mozaiki S.G. Żeleńskiego in Kraków and consisted of 18 quarters filled with gomółki, perfectly harmonising with the Gothic architecture of the church. It was made in the classic medieval technique of fixing with lead slats. Its surface area is almost 12 m2.

The work consisted of dismantling the stained glass, cleaning it, repairing small defects in the glazing, gluing together the cracked gomoles, putting in missing putty, making new frames and replacing the wind catchers to stabilise it.

After the stained-glass window was installed in the Drohobych church, fragments of the stained-glass domes previously stored in the belfry were transported to the conservation workshop. Initial conservation work was carried out on them. The project will continue in the following years.
