Biography:

Józef Barzyński (1839-1906), American clergyman of Polish origin, brother of Father Wincenty Barzyński. Born in Sulisławice, he came to the United States in 1872. From 1874, he exercised pastoral care over St Jadwiga Church in Chicago, and after establishing a parish there in 1888, he became its parish priest. In 1895 he became the target of a riot by parishioners who stormed the rectory demanding his removal. The police intervened and the church was temporarily closed. Fr Eugeniusz Sedlaczek became the new parish priest, and Barzynski was transferred as chaplain to St Mary of Nazareth Hospital in Chicago.
