Monument and other forms of commemoration of John Paul II in Albania

During his visit to the Albanian capital and Shkodra in 1993, John Paul II expressed his deep closeness to the Albanian people, saying: "The Albanian nation holds a special place in my heart, right after the Poles. My love stems from two essential reasons: firstly, because of the prolonged and unjust suffering of the Albanian people, and secondly, because of the invaluable gift to the world that is Mother Teresa of Calcutta."

The memory of John Paul II in Albania is preserved by several important material objects:

1. the John Paul II Monument, which is located between the Air Albania stadium and the Palace of Congresses in Tirana. It was unveiled in 2018 to mark the 25th anniversary of the Pope's pilgrimage to Albania and the 100th anniversary of Poland's independence. The author of the monument is the well-known Albanian sculptor Mumtaz Dhrami. He was also one of the initiators of the erection of the monument and also contributed to the cost of its erection.

2 The bust of St John Paul II in St Paul's Cathedral in Tirana, a gift from the Polish Ambassador to Albania, on whose initiative and that of the President of the Our Lady of Good Counsel Foundation the sculpture was created. Author Mumtaza Dhrami, year of donation 2020. Gift on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Pope's birth and the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Mother.

3. Bust of Saint John Paul II in the Church of Saint John Paul II in Bathore, gift of the Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to Albania, on whose initiative and that of the President of the Our Lady of Good Council Foundation the sculpture was created. Author Mumtaza Dhrami, year of donation 2020. gift on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Pope's birth and the 110th anniversary of the birth of the Holy Mother. The plaque bears inscriptions in Polish and Albanian and a quote from the Holy Father's first pilgrimage to his homeland: "May your Spirit descend and renew the face of the earth. This earth!". There is also a plaque commemorating Jozef Pilsudski in the church.
