Monument commemorating Poles killed in the Battle of Bratislava in 1866

One of the last episodes of the Prussian-Austrian war in 1866 was the Battle of Bratislava. It was fought a few hours before the conclusion of a five-day truce, which was a prelude to the signed Peace of Nikolsburg and then the Peace Treaty of Prague. This treaty ended the Austro-Hungarian Empire's participation in the war. This was the last Prussian-Austrian clash, but not the last battle of the war. This one took place on 26 July 1866 at Uettingen, when Prussia claimed victory over the Bavarian army. The purpose of the battle was to attempt to capture Bratislava before the truce took effect. According to popular accounts, the immediate cause was said to be the ambition of Major-General Bose, commanding the Prussian army, to dine in captured Bratislava. Doubtless personal ambition was not insignificant, but political and strategic issues seem to have been crucial. The Austrians defended the city and many soldiers, including Poles, died in the battle. The deaths of Austrian, Hungarian and Polish soldiers were commemorated in an obelisk erected at the site of the battle, which also included a Polish-language inscription. In 2010, it was moved from the site where the battle took place to a more prominent location in the centre of the former village of Lamač, now incorporated into Bratislava. The obelisk, sits on a two-tier base and plinth. It bears an illegible signature and inscriptions in German, Hungarian and Polish:

KU / MEMORY / TO THE POLYEGLYCHES / e. k. pulku piechoty / ZBROJMISTER / HRABIEGO / ALOJEGO MAZZUCHELL / N O 10 / BRYGADA MONDEL / worthily on 22nd July / 1866 //.
