Polish War Cemetery in Karshi

In January/February 1942, the redeployment of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR (General Anders' Army) from the Soviet Russian republics to the Central Asian republics took place. Units of the 6th Infantry Division and the Army Organisational Centre were located in the then Kashkadarya region. In the Karshi municipal cemetery, a section was set aside for a Polish War Cemetery, where mainly soldiers of the Army Organising Centre who died of disease and exhaustion in the local Soviet hospital were buried. Also buried here was an undetermined number of civilians who had arrived at the places of formation of Polish units following the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 12.08.1941 on the so-called "amnesty for Polish citizens." The quarters did not survive the Soviet era, but an area remains undeveloped with new burials, indicated by local residents. As part of the work carried out by the Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom in 2010, the 58-square-metre quarters were fenced off with a low fence from the other burials in the cemetery. A central monument was erected next to the wall, while at the foot of the monument, on either side of it, plaques were placed with the fixed 42 names of the buried soldiers. The monument is a milepost with a characteristic rectangular shape, uniform for all rebuilt cemeteries in Central Asia, topped by an eagle bas-relief. Its form refers to the soldier's wandering. The monument bears an inscription in Polish and Uzbek: "TU SPOCZYWAJĄ POLACY / 42 SOLDIERS / OF THE POLISH ARMY / GEN. WŁ. ANDERS / AND CIVILIANS / FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR / PRISONERS OF THE SOVIET GULAGS / WHO DIED IN 1942. / ON THEIR WAY TO THEIR HOMELAND / HONOUR THEIR MEMORY". At the entrance to the cemetery there are information plaques with the inscription in Polish and Uzbek: "POLISH / CEMETERY / OF WAR / BUILT THROUGH THE EFFORTS OF THE COUNCIL / FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE MEMORY OF FIGHTS / AND MARTYRDOM / IN WARSAW WITH FUNDS / OF THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND / 2010". After the liquidation of the OPWiM Council, the care of the cemetery is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The Ministry of Culture is also conducting research work to establish a census of civilians buried in cemeteries in Central Asia.
