Polish War Cemetery

In January/February 1942, the redeployment of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR (General Anders' Army) from the Soviet Russian republics to the Central Asian republics took place. Units of the 10th Infantry Division were located in Merke. The servicemen and civilians who died here from exhaustion and disease, and who arrived at the places where the Polish units were being formed following the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on the so-called "amnesty for Polish citizens", announced on 12.08.1941, were buried in a specially created military cemetery. This cemetery was forgotten for decades by the Soviet authorities. During a reconnaissance trip by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance in 1999, it could not be found. However, it later turned out that it was not located within the city limits of Merke, but in nearby Sapatai Batyr, on the private plot of Mr and Mrs Amiryi and Mr Aslan Kikinadze, who have been taking care of this necropolis for years. In 2013. The OPWiM Council reconstructed the cemetery - the centrepiece is a granite obelisk in the shape of a milepost with an image of the Polish Army eagle. At its base lie two slabs with the names of 19 soldiers who rest here. The monument bears an inscription in Kazakh and Polish: "HERE REST / POLISH / SOLDIERS / OF THE POLISH ARMY / IN THE EAST / GEN. WŁ. ANDERS / AND CIVILIANS / FORMER PRISONERS OF WAR / PRISONERS OF SOVIET GULAGS / WHO DIED IN 1942 / ON THEIR WAY TO THEIR HOMELAND / HONOUR THEIR MEMORY!". The surface of the cemetery was marked with the locations of the earthen hills left behind by the graves - tombstones and small crosses were placed in an irregular way. In front of the large cross, a plaque was placed with an inscription in three languages: Kazakh, Polish and Russian: "IN THIS MOGILE rest Polish soldiers / of the army led by General WŁADYSŁAW / ANDERS and civilian persons, former prisoners of war / and inmates of labour camps, died on their way to / their homeland in 1942 / let us bow our heads over their fate and pay homage / to them!"One of the gravestones bears a symbolic plaque: "Ś.P./ kpt. KAROL TOMKOWICZ / born 1888 Gorbaczewo district Krzywicze/ participant in the Polish-Bolshevik war of 1920. / The cemetery is surrounded by a low stone wall, at the entrance there are information plates with inscriptions in Polish and Kazakh: "POLISH / MILITARY CEMETERY / MERKE / FOUNDED BY THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND / BY THE EFFORT OF THE COUNCIL / FOR THE PROTECTION OF MEMORIALS / OF WARS AND MURDER / WHO ALSO CARE / FOR IT".During the opening ceremony of the cemetery, the Secretary of the OPWiM Council Andrzej K. Kunert awarded the Gold Medals of the Guardian of the Places of National Remembrance to Amiria and Aslan Kikinadze, thanks to whom the burials have been preserved. After the liquidation of the OPWiM Council, the care of the cemetery is financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. The Ministry of Culture is also carrying out research work to establish a census of civilians buried in cemeteries in Central Asia.During the opening ceremony of the cemetery, the Secretary of the Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom Andrzej K.
