In May 1941, a group of Polish war refugees who had arrived in 1939, including families with children, were moved to Ocnele Mari from Băile Govora, 15 km away. A primary school and a secondary school - a branch of the general school in Krajowa - were established in Ocnele Mari. In the local cemetery there are 3 graves of Polish refugees who died in 1943: Jadwiga Conrad, Dr Stanisław Woliński and Kazimierz Liche. According to a list compiled by the Embassy of the Polish People's Republic in Bucharest in 1985, these graves were liquidated; indeed, they could not be found afterwards either. It was only in the autumn of 2021 that the Polish Consul in Bucharest found them.
In 2022, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Bucharest and soldiers from the Polish Military Contingent in the country carried out clean-up work: the vegetation overgrowing the graves was cleared, the soil was removed and the grave fields were strewn with grit.
The graves are located in the upper part of the cemetery, surrounded by tall bushes. Next to the path is the grave of Jadwiga Conrad, behind it, below, are the other two. Concrete crosses with legible names stand on the graves.
