Turnu Severin was home to an internment camp for Polish soldiers. In October 1939, 135 junior officers and 751 soldiers were held there. Civilian refugees also arrived here. In the local Catholic cemetery there is a quarter with the graves of 15 Poles who died in this camp. The 13 identical tombstones distinguish it from the other burials in the cemetery. One double grave is arranged in a different style. On the opposite side of the cemetery alley rests Dr Jakub Markiewicz, who also died in the local internment camp. A tombstone similar to those in the quarters has been placed at his resting place. At present, it has not been possible to locate the grave of the two-week-old infant Antoneta Okońska. All that is known is that she died in this locality.All the graves were extensively renovated in 2021 by the Armenian Foundation as part of the task co-financed by the programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage 'Sites of National Remembrance Abroad'.
