Cemetery in Grodek Podolskiy

The cemetery in Grodek Podolskiy is located next to the parish church, which was built anew in 1985, on the site of a church decommissioned in the 1930s. It has an area of about 1.5 ha. The cemetery escaped destruction during the Soviet era, but according to Zbigniew Hauser, due to the expansion of the church complex, many tombstones disappeared from the cemetery irretrievably. He lists more than 80 of them; unfortunately, he did not find the second many after the expansion of the church. Nevertheless, the cemetery is one of the better preserved in the area. The author encountered almost exclusively Polish inscriptions. On almost half of the gravestones they are covered with lime. This is to prevent the identification of Polish families in the past and to protect themselves from deportation.

The oldest burials are from the end of the first half of the 19th century. A popular form of a gravestone in this cemetery is the 'Podolski' cross, as well as cast-iron gravestones: a cannelled column decorated with a garland and a vase, on a pedestal, on the grave of Przemysław Skibniewski (died 1853) or a cast-iron sarcophagus on the grave of Antonina Skibniewska (died 1853). The gravestone of Jan Trzeciewski, who died in 1882, attracts attention. It is a tall cross decorated with polychrome figures of saints. You can also find magnificent stone gravestones in the form of a cross on a plinth, a knotted tree topped with a knotted cross, monuments decorated with bas-reliefs, and gravestones of a neo-Gothic character decorated with pointed arches and maswerki. Cast iron fences have been preserved around some of the gravestones. For many of the monuments elaborate inscriptions have been engraved, such as this one on the tombstone of Wincenty Załucki buried at the beginning of the 20th century: "My days passed away like a shadow, and I withered like hay / ... / He was loved by all because he loved them".

Of particular note are the rhymed inscriptions engraved on the four sides of the plinth on Teodora Lewicka's gravestone. It is a monument in the form of a stone cross decorated with a crown of thorns, on a plinth on which, in addition to the inscription, two hearts pierced by a sword are engraved. No dates are engraved on the monument.
