Tombstone of Iza Salmonowicz

Vilnius | Lithuania
lit. Vilnius

Figure of an angel on a two-stepped pedestal and two-stepped base placed on the burial chamber of the Salmonovich family. The figure of the angel is clearly elongated, with feet raised above the ground. The right hand bent and raised, the left hand lowered with its shackles torn. The angel shown in a slight turn to the left. Head pointing slightly downwards and 3/4 to the right. Eyes half-closed, gaze turned downwards. Hair short wavy. Robe heavily undulating, covered in the upper part with relief floral ornament in the form of stylised lilies. The lower folds of the robe line the left side, providing a structural connection between the figure and the plinth. The long wings spread vertically upwards, the individual feathers clearly outlined. On the second step of the plinth, on the left side, in the upper left corner, the signature (1). On the angel's robe to the rear, the foundry's signature (2) placed at a 90-degree angle. First step of plinth with chiselled corners, with engraved crosses. The second step covered with a panel. The sides decorated with a frame, on the front one an engraved cross with a lily flower, below an engraved inscription. The first step of the base cuboidal, the second step in the form of a small cuboidal dodecahedron. The burial chamber is rectangular in plan, covered by a slab with two vertical elements, of which a cross on a plinth on the right side and an angel figure projecting towards the front on the left side. To the left a fragment of a former 'L' shaped fence, with the shorter side to the front. Fence in the form of stylised lily flowers structurally linked by two horizontal slats. Lilies in the corners higher. Object associated with gravestone 36, sector 8h.

Additional information:

According to the file of Lucjan Uziębła, both tombstones were enclosed by a metal fence of "fancy iron grating". Its remnant can be seen on the right side of the tomb. Prior to the conservation works carried out, fragments of the fence may have been secondarily placed next to the rectangular tomb (the very narrow layout - H 120, W 51, D 290 - attests to the non-self-contained nature of the structure at the time). During the 2015 works, the lattice was rearranged into a T by incorporating it into the structure of the tomb by connecting it with a secondary concrete bench.

Comments on the state of preservation and visible restoration:

conservation carried out after 2000. due to emerging cracks in the plinth, another one carried out in 2013-2015 by the "Terpa" foundation. The tomb was also renovated, secondarily covered with a uniform concrete slab (instead of a concrete band). The layout of the upper part of the tomb was thus changed.
