Cemetery in Korc

Korzec | Ukraine
ukr. Korecʹ (Корець)

The Catholic cemetery in Korc lies in the western part of the town on an area of approximately 1.6 ha. It is a cemetery established in the early 19th century. Zbigniew Hauser reports that the cemetery is surrounded by a wall with a gate, and there is a chapel adapted into an Orthodox church. The author of the description emphasises the variety of forms of the monuments, the richness of ornamentation and the materials used, which makes the Korets cemetery one of the most interesting necropolises in Volhynia.

The monument to the Wroczyński family, crowned by a high stone cross with a ball at its base, stands out in size. Other impressive monuments were erected to Ignacy Drzewiecki and Lukrecja Drzewiecka, née Jakubowska, who died in the first half of the 19th century. The tombstones are in the shape of a tall column on a plinth topped with a vase and entwined with a snake ornament. Some tombstones show cast-iron columns, other tombstones have the form of knotted stone trees, and there are also tombstones. There are also tombstones and obelisks, such as the monument to Roman Chyczewski, who died in 1909, and his family, signed by H. Oleszkiewicz from Zhytomyr, as well as the obelisk made of black marble on the grave of Władysław Waskowski, who died in 1878. The inscription on the gravestone of Teresa Glińska, née Czerkowska, who died in 1856, was placed in an unusual way - it is inscribed on all arms of the cross crowning the gravestone. The preserved inscriptions indicate that the persons buried belonged mostly to noble families. Hauser lists about 100 gravestones in the publication, of which a dozen are unnamed. However, this number is not closed. Between 2012 and 2017, clean-up work was carried out by young people from the Syców High School, which consisted of clearing the area of overgrowth, repainting inscriptions, placing fallen monuments and repairing broken ones. Photographic documentation and an inventory were carried out. During these works, new monuments were discovered every now and then, which is how a sandstone monument was found - probably the oldest one in the cemetery, dating from 1804 of the court doorkeeper Lubaczewska. h ttp://s tudiowschod.org.pl/korzec2015.htm
