Cemetery in Wierzchownia

A burial chapel of the Rzewuski family has been preserved in Wierzchownia, where, according to local tradition, members of the family were buried, as well as the child of the French writer Honorius Balzak and Ewelina, née Rzewuska Hańska, later Balzak's wife, and Wacław Rzewuski and his children. The crypts are currently empty.

The chapel is located in the park about 300 metres to the south of the palace. Originally a two-storey building, only the ground floor remained after it was destroyed during the Revolution. The building was erected in the early 19th century, probably in 1810. Zbigniew Hauser reports that it was used as a warehouse and gymnasium during the Soviet era. In the 1990s, the dome supported by an octagonal arcade drum, topped with a lantern and cross, was rebuilt. The mausoleum building has neo-Gothic and neo-classical elements. The façade is decorated with a frieze, ogival windows; an arcaded entrance leads to the interior. The burial chapel has been registered as a monument of cultural heritage of Ukraine.
