Biography:

Wojciech Lutowski (1809-1871), born in the Radom area, engineer-mechanic, architect and inventor, designer of transport infrastructure in Venezuela, fought as a non-commissioned officer in the November Uprising. He began his studies at the Warsaw Polytechnic. After the fall of the uprising, he emigrated to France, where he studied engineering at the École Centrale des Arts et Métiers and worked on railway construction. In 1839, he moved to the United Kingdom. There he worked in the office of Charles Whitestone, where galvanic currents and telegraphic transmissions were studied. In Britain there he presented his two new inventions: an improved cannon barrel and a locomotive. He did not find success among British engineers. In 1841 he moved to Venezuela, with whose government he signed a contract. There he was involved in road building, including the important road from Caracas to La Guaira. In addition to roads, he also made dams, port facilities, churches and a theatre in Caracas waterworks and a mountain railway system. His inventions were important for the country. He remained a patriot, as evidenced by the fact that on hearing of the outbreak of the January Uprising, he constructed a machine gun. It was not put into use due to difficulties in the availability of ammunition. He died in Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela.
