Navaria cemetery

Nawaria | Ukraine
ukr. Nawarija (Наварія)
Located in the north-eastern part of the village, the Catholic cemetery was probably established at the end of the 19th century, as can be deduced from the dates on the surviving gravestones. It is picturesquely situated on a wooded hill overlooking the church. It is still active, but the old part is quite neglected and overgrown with vegetation. It is a typical rural cemetery characterised by a lack of a defined spatial layout. The gravestones are scattered on the slopes of the hill.

According to Hauser, there are no gravestones of particular artistic value there. However, he draws attention to an obelisk with a bas-relief of a kneeling girl on the grave of Emilia Kandlowa (died 1937); a rock topped with a folk Crucifixion Group on the grave of Maria Ol[...]kowska (died 1940) or a monument with a statue of St. Gregory in a niche, topped with a folk crucifix on the grave of Grzegorz Goj[...] (died 1899).

Also noteworthy is the inscription: "Not yet in bloom, they have already been broken off / So God commanded / God obeyed / Wreathe them with an angel" on the grave of Niunia and Krysia Gruba (d. 1939).

In the interwar period there was also a war cemetery from 1918-1919.

Information about the cemetery published (see bibliography).
