Cemetery in Gieranony

Gieranony | Belarus
biał. Hieraniony (Геранёны)
Cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).

According to Lewkowski and Walczak, "the church cemetery in Gieranony is located on the southern edge of the village (...). It is bordered to the west by the ruins of the Gasztold castle, built by the Lithuanian voivode and chancellor Albrecht Gasztold in the first half of the 16th century, and is surrounded on the other sides by small-town buildings. The church square has a roughly square ground plan and is surrounded by a stone wall with a gate on the northern side. On the square is the Baroque St. Nicholas Church built in 1779 by the foundation of Jan Probacz on the site of the original church built in 1529 by Albrecht Gasztold (...). In the wall of the chapel is a cast-iron epitaph plaque of Oskar Korwin-Milewski, owner of Gieranon (d. 1906) and buried in the chapel of which he was the founder. To the south of the church is the only gravestone in the cemetery, that of Stanisław Sakowicz (d. 1879). The cemetery is overgrown with grass. The state of preservation of the cemetery is good." Epitaph inscription: "S. P. OSKAR KORWIN-MILEWSKI / BORN. 12 DECEMBER 1817 + 25 OCTOBER 1906. / IN THIS RESTING CHAPEL, WHICH TO / THE GLORY OF GOD HE BUILT / ASKS FOR PRAYERS". Inscription from the only gravestone: STANISŁAW SAKOWICZ / DIED. 12 JUNE 1879 / AGED 63 / ASKS FOR A SIGH TO GOD".

The second cemetery, according to Lewkowski and Walczak, "the active Catholic cemetery (formerly parish cemetery) in Gieranony is located by the local road, 500 m west of the edge of the village." Its area is 0.9 ha. It was built in the 1st half of the 19th century and is well preserved. It has a rectangular plan. Most of the gravestones here are from the 1st half of the 20th century. The 19th-century tombstones are located in the north-eastern part. The oldest, from 1840, belongs to Pior Łowieniecki, with the inscription: "PIOTR ŁOWIENIECKI / UM. 4 NOVEMBER 1840. / AGED 50 YEARS".
