Biography:

Jolanta Owidzka (1927-2020), born in Radom, artist, creator of artistic textiles and designer of decorative fabrics. She completed her first studies at the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Cracow under the guidance of Prof. Stefan Gałkowski (Weaving Department) and Prof. Tadeusz Kantor (Painting Department). Subsequently, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. There, she studied under Prof. Eleonora Plutyńska and Prof. Mieczysław Szymański at the Faculty of Tapestry. At the same time, she attended classes with Prof. Marek Włodarski, where she learned painting. She graduated in 1952. From 1949, she cooperated with the Office for the Supervision of Production Aesthetics (later the Institute of Industrial Design). There she was involved in textile design and research activities. Both her designs and her in-depth reflection on the meaning and role of textiles in the domestic interior were appreciated and awarded. In 1960, the artist had a solo exhibition at the Zachęta Gallery. The event is regarded as one of the turning points in the history of Polish artistic textiles, and often as the beginning of the phenomenon of the Polish School of Artistic Textiles. Jolanta Owidzka has participated in dozens of national and international exhibitions, gaining worldwide recognition as an innovative fibre artist. Her works can be found in collections all over the world and are still highly valued collector's items today.
