Biography:

Tamara Łempicka (1898-1980), born in Warsaw. She came from an affluent family, belonging to the cultural and social elite of pre-war Poland. As a child she spent her holidays in Western Europe, including France and Italy and Switzerland. There she became acquainted with great works of painting, which later influenced her work. From 1911, she lived in St Petersburg. In 1916 she married Tadeusz Lempicki. After the October Revolution they moved to France. In Paris, Lempicka took painting lessons. In the 1920s she led a rich and excessively social life. In 1938 she emigrated with her second husband from Europe to the United States of America. There, she continued her artistic activities; her distinctive style, often described as emblematic of the art deco era, was however considered archaic over time. The artist died in partial oblivion, but today her art is popular in Poland, gaining the attention of both the public and scholars.
