Cemetery in Kiemieliszki

Kiemieliszki | Belarus
biał. Kiemiełiszki (Кемелішкі)
An active Catholic cemetery established in the 2nd half of the 19th century, it is located about 1 km from the church. The rectangular-plan cemetery, located on a flat terrain, covers an area of 1.1 ha and is fenced with a stone rampart (to the west) and with brick posts and a wooden fence (to the north). The entrance gate is located to the north. A path starts at the gate, which branches off into other paths after 20m. Gravestones from the 1st half of the 20th century predominate. The oldest surviving gravestone is that of seven-month-old Henryk Kisiel, dating from 1887. It is located on the south side at the junction of the paths. It has the form of a rectangular granite slab with chamfered corners. The inscription of the gravestone has been preserved: / THE LATE HENRYK KISIEL/ + 7 JANUARY. 1887/ AT THE 7TH MONTH OF LIFE/ ASKS FOR A PIOUS SIGH/ THE ANXIOUS PARENTS OF THE MEMORIAL SACRIFICE/. "A characteristic feature of the cemetery in Kiemieliszki is the significant number of burials of young men who died tragically in 1944, probably soldiers of the Home Army".
Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography).
