Biography:

Maurycy Minkowski (1881-1930), Polish painter of Jewish origin. As a child, he became deaf as a result of an accident. He showed an early aptitude for painting, as a seven-year-old he studied at the Institute for the Deaf and took private lessons. In 1905, he graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he studied with Józef Mehoffer and Leon Wyczółkowski, among others. After his studies, he travelled extensively, having been to Odessa (shortly after the Jewish pogrom), Berlin, Dresden, Munich, Vienna and Paris, where he settled. He often returned to Poland, where he took an active part in numerous artistic events. His works were exhibited in Poland and around the world In 1930, he travelled to Argentina for an exhibition. During the trip, he had a car accident, as a result of which he died. He created realistic paintings related to Jewish themes: he depicted rituals, culture, mysticism and customs, but also pogroms, poverty and poverty.
