Biography:

Alicja Halicka (1889-1974), born in Kraków, painter, stage designer, costume designer and illustrator. She studied painting and drawing with Leon Wyczółkowski, Wojciech Weiss and Józef Pankiewicz at the Maria Niedzielska School of Fine Arts for Women in Kraków. In 1912 she moved abroad where she continued her studies, first in Munich and later in Paris at the Académie Ranson. In 1913, she married the painter Louis Marcoussis. She worked with opera and ballet theatres in Europe and the United States, and with the magazines Harper's Bazaar and Vogue. She exhibited her work at the Société des Artistes Indépendants (1921), Galerie Georges Petit in Paris (1930-31), Le Centaure in Brussels, Leicester Galleries in London (1934), Harriman Gallery in New York (1936) and Julian Levy Gallery in New York (1937).
