Mass grave of evacuated concentration camp prisoners at Västra Kyrkogarden Cemetery

Västra Kyrkogarden Cemetery contains the grave of German concentration camp prisoners who were evacuated from Germany as part of the Swedish Red Cross relief effort in 1945. The effort was initiated and organised by Count Folke Bernadotte, vice-chairman of the Swedish Red Cross, and was colloquially known as the 'White Buses'. - comes from the colour of the vehicles used to transport the evacuees. On arrival in Sweden, the evacuees were sent for treatment or convalescence, but despite care, some died of exhaustion and acquired diseases. A centre was organised in Halmstad where the Poles were sent for further treatment and convalescence after quarantine. The 12 women who died in 1945 were buried in a grave. - 10 Polish women and 2 women prisoners of other nationalities. At their resting place is a monument in the form of a cross made of metal bars, into which the figure of a woman has been incorporated. The whole is situated on a pedestal, on the central part of which is engraved the image of an eagle and the date "1945", on either side of which are plaques with the inscription in Polish and Swedish: "Zmarli na progu wolności" and the names of the deceased. Photos taken from the website "Polish traces in Sweden" www.polskieslady.se have been included with the permission of the administrator.
