Grave site of evacuated concentration camp prisoners

Norra Kyrkogarden Cemetery contains the graves of prisoners from German concentration camps who were evacuated from Germany as part of the Swedish Red Cross relief effort in 1945. The effort was initiated and organised by Count Folke Bernadotte, vice-chairman of the Swedish Red Cross, and was colloquially known as the 'White Buses'. - comes from the colour of the vehicles used to transport the evacuees. On arrival in Sweden, the evacuees were sent for treatment or convalescence, but despite the care, some of them died of exhaustion and acquired diseases. The graves are marked with crosses and name plates. The central place of the quarter is occupied by a plaque with the inscription in Polish and Swedish: "Here rest former prisoners of the Nazi concentration camps who died of disease and exhaustion shortly after being rescued by the Swedish Red Cross as a result of the action of Count Folke Bernadotte. Danuta Wisniewska aged 22, Aniela Sarosiek aged 38, Władysława Pubanc aged 34, Katarzyna Andrzejewska aged 49, Maria Wojtczak aged 57, Michalina Botnicka aged 39, Józef Szewczyk aged 19, Hózef Garbiński aged 35, Józef Dzierbut aged 34, Stanisław Maraś aged 25, Teresa Średzińska aged 14, Władysław Daszek aged 39, Władysław Skonieczny aged 24. Honour their memory. Union of Fighters for Freedom and Democracy; Council for the Protection of Monuments to Struggle and Martyrdom".
