Grave of civilians shot by the Germans during World War II

In 1943, the Germans and the Belarusian police murdered more than 130 members of the local Polish intelligentsia in one day. The victims included Jadwiga and Piotr Chomicz, the teachers, Maria Tymińska, the mother of Jadwiga Chomicz, and Marek, the Chomiczs' 1.5 year old son. The victims were buried in the forest, near the Orthodox cemetery. The grave was found in the 1990s and commemorated thanks to the Union of Poles in Volkovysk. In 1992, the Guard of Polish Graves from Wrocław erected a cross here with the emblem of their association. In 1995, a monument was erected on the grave, funded by the Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Struggle and Martyrdom. The inscription reads: "TO THE MURDERED / POLAKS IN 1943 / CITIZENS OF THE CITY / WOŁKOWYSK 1995. // LET US PRAY AMONG THE TREES / FOR THE TRAMPLED HEATHER - / FOR THE BLOOD SHED, / FOR THE SHATTERED FATE!".
