The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division under the command of General Bronislaw Prugar-Ketling, which took part in the fighting in France in 1940, was ordered to withdraw to Switzerland after running out of ammunition on 19.06.1940. On the night of 19-20.06.1940, the division's approximately 13,000 soldiers crossed the Swiss border and were interned until the end of the war. They stayed in camps that had been set up, working in various sectors of the Swiss economy. At Gebenstorf, on the edge of the forest, a large camp was set up - the soldiers were placed in barracks built for the purpose and employed in the construction of roads of military importance and in agricultural and garden work. Among the internees was, now a well-known painter, Sergeant Stanislaw Stryczek. In the local school, he painted a fresco on the wall depicting an interned soldier being helped by the Swiss. It was an expression of gratitude to a nation that had kindly received the internees. In the cemetery in Gebenstorf rested 6 dead soldiers, their graves forming an unfenced quarters. Above the concrete tombstones in the form of small plaques with inscriptions containing names, surnames and the year of birth and death, pillars with divisional eagles rise.
