Graves of concentration camp prisoners at St. Sigfrids Griftegärd Cemetery

The Prästkragen section of St. Sigfrids Griftegard Cemetery holds the remains of prisoners of German concentration camps who were evacuated from Germany as part of the Swedish Red Cross relief effort in 1945. The effort was initiated and organised by Count Folke Bernadotte, vice-chairman of the Swedish Red Cross, and was colloquially known as the 'White Buses'. - comes from the colour of the vehicles used to transport the evacuees. On arrival in Sweden, the evacuees were sent for treatment or convalescence, but despite the care, some of them died of exhaustion and acquired diseases. In Boras there was a centre where prisoners were sent for further treatment and convalescence after quarantine. In the cemetery rested 13 Poles who died in 1945. The burial place is commemorated by a stone with the inscription in Swedish "At minnet av bröder fran främmande länder. Församlingarna i Boras och Bramhult reste stenen" ("In memory of brothers from foreign countries. The parishes in Boras and Bramhult have erected a stone") and plaques with the names of the deceased. Photos from the website "Polish traces in Sweden" www.polskieslady.se have been included with the permission of the administrator.
