Biography:

Ludwika Nitschowa née Kraskowske (1889-1989) was a Polish sculptor. After graduating from high school, she worked for two years in the studio of Leon Wyczółkowski in Kraków. From 1909 to 1912 she studied at the School of Fine Arts for Women by Maria Niedzielska, from which she graduated with a medal. From 1923 to 1926, however, she studied sculpture at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts in the atelier of Tadeusz Breyer. Together with a group of his students, she founded the cooperative 'Forma' in 1929, carrying out commissions for tombstones, church and architectural sculptures. Her first exhibitions of paintings and sculptures took place at Warsaw's Zachęta gallery in 1929 and 1930, and she later also exhibited at the Institute of Art Propaganda (1930-1937), as well as in Brussels and Paris. In the 1930s she was a member of the board of the Association of Professional Sculptors and from 1945 a member of the Association of Polish Visual Artists. From 1950 she worked at the Department of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1956 she was appointed associate professor. She was head of the sculpture department and vice-dean of the faculty. Among those who studied under her were Kazimierz Gustaw Zemła and Stanisław Kulon. She retired in 1962.
