Conservation work on the Nicolaus Copernicus statue in Rome

The sculpture depicting Nicolaus Copernicus is located in the courtyard of the General House of the Congregation of the Resurrection in Rome. It came from the chisel of a sculptor from Volhynia who was active in Rome, Tomasz Oskar Sosnowski, and was completed in 1873. - on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Copernicus' birth.

The work on the statue was preceded by the preparation of a plaster bozette, which has been preserved to this day. The actual sculpture was made of Carrara marble.

Conservation and restoration work was carried out on the statue. As well as cleaning it, the fingers, which had been lost in the past, were reconstructed. An astrolabe of Copernicus was also made and the inscriptions were authenticated.

The Copernicus statue was exhibited at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome in 1883 and was later donated to the Resurrectionist priests.

The conservation work was carried out in 2023 as part of the Polonica Institute's strategic programme 'Protection of Polish Cultural Heritage Abroad'.
