Sculpture by Magdalena Więcek "Stone of St. Margarethen" in St. Margarethen

Variants of the name:

Rzeźba Magdaleny Więcek „Stein aus St. Margarethen” w Sankt Margarethen

Magdalena Więcek has participated in several foreign plein-airs and sculpture symposia (including Aalborg). The work from Sankt Margarethen is the best known of these, and the most frequently reproduced. It is also one of the artist's largest sculptures carved in stone. The sculptor began work on it in the summer of 1963 and completed it a year later. She continued to return to St Margarethen afterwards, and became a member of the international symposium board. The meetings of stone sculptors in the former Roman quarries near Sankt Margarethen, which have been held since 1959, have repeatedly attracted outstanding Polish artists (e.g. Adolf Ryszka, Alina Szapocznikow).

In the mid-1960s, the sculptor's explorations followed two trends: geometric abstraction and forms with organic associations. The realisation in Austria belongs to the latter: the huge mass brings to mind a plant, a fungus, but also primordial dolmens.

Like the entire symposium site, the sculpture gives the impression of being abandoned, standing on the slope of a hill, among overgrown grasses.
