Biography:

Maja Berezowska (1892/1893-1978) - Polish painter, illustrator, caricaturist; active in Poland, Germany, France, Sweden. Born in a country estate in Baranowicze. She was educated by the modernist painter Nikolai Roerich (1874-1947) in St. Petersburg, at the Maria Niedzielska School of Fine Arts for Women in Kraków, and then at the atelier of Erwin Knirr (1894-1973) in Munich. From 1932 to 1936/1937, she was in Paris, where she published in Le Canard enchaine, Le Figaro, Ici Paris, Le Rire and La Vie Parisienne, among other publications, and realised painterly compositions. In 1935, she caused an international scandal with the publication of a series of illustrations in , "Ici Paris" for the article "Hitler intime et les amours du susse Adolf" ("The pleasures of sweet Adolf"). During the Second World War, she was sent to the women's concentration camp at Ravensbrück on this account. After the war, in 1946, she returned to Poland. Among her most recognisable works are compositions with erotic overtones.
