PROTECTION PROGRAM

The objective of the program for the preservation of Polish cultural heritage abroad is to ensure the protection of particularly valuable objects of Polish cultural heritage located outside the country. These include immovable monuments (such as works of architecture and construction, cemeteries, parks and gardens, sites of historical events, or places associated with the activities of prominent individuals or institutions) as well as movable monuments (such as works of fine art, artistic craftsmanship, and applied arts, historical memorabilia, interior decorations, architectural details and ornaments, tombstones, and other elements of minor architecture, such as chapels and roadside crosses).

The protection of Polish cultural heritage abroad requires a strategic, long-term approach, carefully planned over multiple stages and successive years. This is why the projects of the POLONIKA Institute are extensive and involve a network of experts across various specialized fields. The Institute's mission is to focus particularly on objects of significant importance to Polish history and culture, which is why research, rescue, and conservation work is systematically carried out at these sites.

The conservation projects undertaken by the Institute begin with the preparation of comprehensive professional documentation, which includes structural, architectural, and conservation research. Only through a thorough understanding of a given building, its history, and the changes it has undergone over the years is it possible to undertake work aimed at restoring monuments to their proper technical and aesthetic condition.

The restoration of monuments to their appropriate technical and aesthetic state is essential to address the damage they have suffered over time.

To preserve the traces of Polish culture abroad, the Institute also carries out projects commemorating individuals and events of historical importance to the Republic of Poland as part of the Polish Cultural Heritage Preservation program. We provide substantial support and assistance to institutions and organizations engaged in the protection of cultural heritage abroad, as well as to centers that manage collections of artworks, historical artifacts, archival records, and library resources.

The projects implemented under the Polish Cultural Heritage Preservation program include:

Selection of objects for conservation and restoration work.

Preparation of comprehensive professional documentation, including conservation, architectural, structural, and other studies necessary for accurately assessing the condition of the object and planning the required work.

Implementation of conservation, restoration, and renovation projects, including protective, rescue, preventive, and archaeological work.
