Tomb of the Revd Onufry Łabuć

At the far end of the church yard, opposite the presbytery, there is a gravestone monument bearing the names of three priests: the long-serving parish priest and dean (1830-1861) Fr Mikołaj Kozłowski, his nephew Fr Stanisław Owsany and Fr Onufry Łabuć, one of the leaders of the November Uprising in 1831, who is buried here.

Fr Onufry Łabuć was born on 20 May 1802 (according to the Julian calendar) into the noble Łabuci family as the son of Mateusz and Marcjanna Jukniewiczówna, in the beautifully situated Szamina manor. He received his master's degree in theology and was ordained a priest in the school year 1825/26. At first he worked in the parish of Wabalninki, then he became vicar in Dusety, which belonged to the Plater family. From 1829 he served as chaplain at the filial church in the village of Cejkinie of the Daugeliškis parish. From here he set out to lead the insurgents attacking Swieciany.

The gravestone monument is made of stone. The inscription to honour Fr Łabuć, placed on the back, least visible wall of the monument, reads: "Beneath the same stone lies the late priest Onufry Łabuć killed on 31 March 1831 at the age of 29". Below this inscription, at the base of the monument, a plaque in Lithuanian was affixed in 2000: "A+A 1831 metu sukilelis kunigas ANUPRAS LABUTIS 1802 - žuves 1831 03 31".
