Monument to Pope John Paul II in Buenos Aires

Variants of the name:
Monumento a Juan Pablo II

The statue of John Paul II was made in 1998 by the Polish sculptor Stanislaw Slonina, and funded by the Union of Poles in Argentina, the Jan Kobylanski Foundation and the Union of Polish Associations and Organisations in Latin America. The work was coordinated on the Polish side by Archbishop Zygmunt Kaminski. It represents a gift of gratitude from Polish emigrants and their descendants to the Argentine nation/ Prof. Stanislaw Slonina was awarded the Gold Medal of the Argentine Parliament for the creation of the monument.

It was solemnly unveiled on the anniversary of the Pope's first pilgrimage as a tribute to his achievements on 6 August 1999. The ceremony took place in the presence of, among others, Carlos Saul Menem President of Argentina, Apostolic Nuncio Msgr. Ubaldo Calabresi and the Primate of Argentina, Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio.

The monument is located in a park in the city centre in front of the National Library and is a popular site visited by pilgrims, tourists and Buenos Aires residents. Its location, surrounded by the greenery of the park, adds to its charm and makes it a place of peace and quiet in the heart of a bustling city. Various events are held at it, including masses, processions and prayers. The monument was cast in bronze at the Gliwice Technical Equipment Works.

On the initiative of the Argentine-Polish Cultural Association, a plaque was laid and unveiled at the monument to John Paul II in 2021. The plaque was consecrated by Bishop Miroslaw Adamczyk, Apostolic Nuncio to the Argentine Republic.
