Aga-Bala Guliyev House in Baku

Variants of the name:
Pałac Aga-Bała Kulijewa w Baku, Agabala Guliyev's House, The building of Union of Architects of Azerbaijan

The Aga-Bala Guliyev House in Baku was built in 1899, based on a design by Eugene Skibiński. It is located at 24 M. Mukhtarova St. The building was constructed during a period of significant growth in Baku development, and the Aga-Bala House influenced the development of Azerbaijani architecture in the national-romantic trend. Currently, the building is recognised as one of the leading examples of this style. The building has numerous decorations taken from Arabic art, including arabesques. It is richly decorated both on the front and inside. It was built on a rectangular plan, is two-storey and faces two small streets on two sides. It is built of brick, plastered with rustication; there are numerous cast-iron decorative elements. A major architectural achievement is that the building has a three-dimensional façade, despite the fact that it is located on narrow streets. It currently belongs to the Azerbaijan Union of Architects.
